The Steamfitters Industry Training Center offers a comprehensive education and training program for apprentices and journeypersons of Local 638. The Apprenticeship is a five-year program whereby apprentices attend classes on a two-week cycle, one day every two weeks for a full seven-hour day for which they are paid for if they are employed.

At our state-of-the-art Training Center, apprentices are educated in classroom theory on all types of piping systems in the industry including HVACR, Fire Protection and Power Generation. In response to an ever-changing industry, instruction focuses on new technologies like Geothermal, Variable Refrigerant Flow, Chilled Beams and other green technology systems.

We recruit from a wide range of applicants and our apprentices reflect the diversity of the communities in which we live and work. We also recruit from programs such as Nontraditional Employment for Women, Helmets To Hardhats, Construction Skills, Opportunities Long Island, and Pathways to Apprenticeship.  These programs provide opportunities for Women, Veterans who have served our country, the formerly incarcerated, and applicants in underserved communities.

Safety is paramount as all OSHA and NYC Dept. of Building requirements are incorporated into the program. Apprentices graduate with all necessary safety training to work on any NYC construction site.

Training of all types of piping joining is provided in the Welding, Soldering/Brazing, Sprinkler and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Shops. Certification programs in pipe welding, brazing, refrigerant recovery and rigging are an essential part of the program that maximizes the employability of the apprentice.

Apprentices mostly work in the field, where they earn while they learn! On the job training under the supervision of the finest skilled craftsmen and women coupled with the education and training at the Training Center prepares the Steamfitter Apprentice for a career, not just a job.
